What I Know About Love:
4:30 a.m., a thunderous roar, flashing lights then blackness, house vibrating on its foundation. A huge oak tree, crushing the front porch, blowing out the window and spraying glass on my sleeping daughter. Me, trembling so violently for the next hour w/what might’ve been that I have to get up and change my shirt, soaked through w/icy sweat. The dogs, pacing, so frightened that Sadie finally climbs out of our bed and lies on the floor beside them, until we all drift off at last. Fudge, appearing at the foot of our bed: “Mama, I threw up… in my bed.” Brushing my teeth in the dark. Aud, walking in the bathroom, surly in full-length velour choral gown, patent leather heels, and a headlamp. Me, doubling over, laughing until I cry. Life is wonderful. Happy Valentine’s, y’all.
