The literal pulling away:

Aud, receiving the book she’d been asking for: “Ohmigosh thank you SO much, Mom!” 

She reaches to give me a sort of one-armed-half-hug-pat, but decides against it just as I hungrily grope the air to return the affection. 

[pause]

Aud: “Okay. That was awkward.”
